Beeswax Lamps Odd Inq lamps have a unique appeal. The quality of light that comes from the beeswax shades enhances the beauty of the pottery bases and mahogany fittings, while creating a soothing atmosphere in its environment. After being commissioned to make beeswax sconces for Fore Street restaurant in Portland, Maine, Jon applied his his mold making and design skills to the creation of beeswax shades for his thrown lamp bases. The combination of materials (clay, mahogany, beeswax and electricity) is a fusion of modern and antique aesthetic that Jon aspires to in all of his work. The base is designed and built to coordinate with the proportions of the shade. Each shade is cast with a blend of waxes to prevent slumping. After the ceramic base has been fired, the dome and harp fittings are lathe turned in mahogany. The lamp is then finished with a low wattage candelabra fixture and reproduction UL listed cloth wrapped cord. Each lamp is made to order by Jon, so no two are exactly alike (although pairs are made with the intent to match). Often they are created and sold as a one-of-a-kind item in the gallery. Odd Inq shades are formulated to resist slumping with a beeswax that has a high melting point. However, some care is required to maintain the longevity of the shade. Caring for your beeswax shade:
